Thorpe Hall nurses celebrate completion of palliative care degree

Claire Martin, Liason Sister at Thorpe Hall Hospice, and has worked at Sue Ryder Care 7 years.  Claire studied for 3 years whist also working full time, and keeping up with all the jobs and chores at home, and is thrilled to have now accomplished finished a BA (Hons) in Palliative Care.
 
Claire commented:  “The degree has been so worthwhile.  I’ve gained lots of new skills and knowledge, which I can share with my colleagues and which our patients and their families can now also benefit from.”
 
 
Maria O’Neil, Staff Nurse at Thorpe Hall Hospice, and has worked here for 12.5 years.  Maria finished the same qualification as Claire, however she had previously studied for 2 years for a Diploma in Palliative Care, which meant her degree took 2 years to complete.  Maria also continued to work full time as well as running 2 households – her own, and her mother’s.
 
Maria said:  “The degree has been really interesting and it is great to be able to share new knowledge with my colleagues and become a role model.   The graduation ceremony was very emotional and there were a lot of tears when my husband and told me he had never been so proud!”
 
The degree was studied through Anglia Ruskin College and covered topics such as the principles of palliative care, the theory behind palliative care, pain management, and research into palliative care.
